    Alternative secondary methods like UV radiation, ozone, or mixed oxidants can supplement chlorine but do not replace the need for a residual disinfectant in the water.

Mechanism of Action

Disinfectants release active chlorine species that attack and destroy cell walls of microorganisms, disrupt metabolic processes, and oxidize organic waste. Maintaining a sufficient free chlorine level is crucial because it represents the active disinfectant available in the water. Free chlorine levels are typically monitored in parts per million (ppm) and adjusted to remain within effective sanitation ranges.

Usage & Dosing

Proper disinfection requires dosing based on pool volume, water quality, and swimmer load. For routine maintenance, maintain recommended free chlorine residual levels appropriate for the type of pool and local guidelines. Shock chlorination with higher doses is used after heavy use, after rain, or when algae appear to rapidly restore water quality. Pre‑dissolving dry chemicals and ensuring circulation improves distribution.
